KUWAIT: Kuwait's State Security police successfully foiled a major terrorist plot and dismantled a network linked to the Hezbollah banned terrorist organization, the Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday.
The operation, which followed precise security surveillance and tracking, resulted in the apprehension of a cell planning to carry out assassinations targeting state symbols and high-ranking leaders.
Security forces have taken into custody six individuals currently in the country, including five Kuwaiti citizens and one stateless individual whose citizenship had been previously revoked.
Additionally, authorities have identified and are tracking 14 fugitives currently located outside the country. The fugitives include 5 Kuwaiti citizens, 5 Stateless individuals (with revoked citizenship), 2 Iranian nationals, and 2 Lebanese nationals.
According to the Ministry, the suspects have confessed to charges of espionage and joining a prohibited terrorist organization. They admitted to being prepared to execute specific missions aimed at assassinating state leadership and undermining Kuwait’s supreme national interests.
Investigations revealed that the cell members received advanced military training abroad at the hands of Hezbollah operatives. This training reportedly included the use of sophisticated weaponry and explosives, advanced surveillance and monitoring techniques, and specific skills related to carrying out assassinations.
The ministry characterized these activities as "high treason" and a "blatant departure" from the principles of national loyalty.
The apprehended suspects have been referred to the Public Prosecution for formal legal proceedings. Security agencies are continuing their investigations to identify and pursue any further individuals who may be linked to or cooperating with this cell.
The Ministry of Interior emphasized that the security and sovereignty of Kuwait are a "red line" that will not be compromised.
"The actions of this cell constitute a highly dangerous criminal act and a direct assault on the stability of Kuwait," the statement read. (KUNA)
